Nick Luallin and Jackie Newgard from IT Motives partner with PDXWIT to present a workshop/discussion about the job market for technology professionals in Portland. The workshop will take place at Planet Argon and will begin at 5:30pm and go until 7:00pm.

This will be the first in many craft nights where we can create new things together and brainstorm ideas for future event activities. PDXWIT presents a woman-focused Coderetreat in honor of the Global Day of Coderetreat 2016. Coderetreat.org is a self-organized, volunteer led organization dedicated to helping software developers help each other improve their craft. Tanya Crenshaw and Jean Richardson will be teaming up to facilitate PDXWIT's 2016 Coderetreat. The Tech Academy is donating space and providing breakfast and lunch for the event. Come along for a day of codeplay in a supportive environment and help Coderetreat follow the sun during the global celebration of software development!

Here's how it works: SW developers of all sorts gather together with their machines and IDE's ready to code Conway's Game of Life for 45 minute sessions. Pairs change with every 45 minute iteration so everyone gets exposed to different problem solving strategies, and everyone learns together: newbies and master-craft persons alike. There is no expectation to finish coding Conway's Game of Life at any point during the day.

The purpose is to learn coding problem solving strategies, share skills and experience pairing in a supportive environment.

PDX Women In Tech, Jama Software and Code Fellows are partnering to screen Most Likely to Succeed, a documentary about the school systems that are preparing our kids with skills relevant to the modern work place. This documentary has an emphasis on STEM education, hands-on experience, a "makers" mentality to solving problems and using creativity in all aspects of life.

Director Greg Whiteley (Mitt, 2014 Sundance Film Festival) locates the source of the problem not in the economy but in our educational system, which was developed at the dawn of the Industrial Age to train obedient workers. With a world of information available a click away, and the modern workplace valuing skills like collaboration and critical thinking, our rote-based system of learning has become outdated and ineffective. We will not stand by silently as policies are enacted that systematically subjugate women, people of color and other underrepresented groups. Since our federal House and Senate dominate the national news, we want to make sure our voices are heard. Join PDXWiT #Action on Saturday, January 28th to attend a town hall meeting with Senator Jeff Merkley.

Jeff Merkley is one of two senators who represent Oregon in Washington DC. This town hall meeting is an opportunity for all Multnomah County residents to learn more about the US government and how their policies impact our lives. All are welcome to attend.

Free Geek and PDXWIT are partnering up for our first group volunteer activity. Dani Schulte will be teaching volunteers how to manually disassemble computers, peripheral electronic devices, and other electronic hardware.

Manual disassembly is important for 2 main reasons:

1. Significantly reduces landfill-bound waste from electronics in comparison to mechanized recycling done by for-profit recycling operations.

2. Produces high-quality separated metals.

Agenda:

Dani will do a brief orientation with you when you arrive at 3:30pm. Must read, fill out, and sign the Volunteer Application (unless you have volunteered here before). The Group Volunteer Form must also be filled out. All the required forms will be emailed to the volunteers closer to the event. Please bring the applications and the Group Form when you come to volunteer!

Hand tools, power drills, aprons, safety goggles and gloves provided - close-toed shoes are required to volunteer at Free Geek.

Join PDXWIT #Action to go to a Reproductive Health Rally in Salem on Tuesday, February 28th. In alignment with our recent PDXWIT #Action survey, women’s health is a top issue for our members. PDXWIT knows that affordable family planning is critical for women, especially those that choose to pursue tech careers.

We will be organizing a carpool down to Salem. If you can drive or need a ride please fill in this Google doc and self-organize with your driver to schedule rides. We will be departing Portland at 10:30 a.m.

We will meet on the corner of NE Court St and E Summer Street NE at 11:30, look for the bright green PDXWIT T-shirts. The rally is from 12 PM - 1 PM on the steps of the capitol in Salem. After the rally we will get an informal lunch in the area. Please fill in the Google doc if you would like to join so that we can find a restaurant that accommodates all of us. Feel free to bring protest and rally signs.

This rally is to support The Reproductive Health Equity Act, an Oregon State Legislature bill. The Reproductive Health Equity Act (HB 2232) is an important leap toward ensuring that all Oregonians have meaningful access to the care they need. Thousands of Oregonians still lack coverage for the full range of reproductive health services. You can learn more about the bill here.

The rally is produced by Pro-Choice Coalition of Oregon,a diverse, statewide coalition.They are working to create a world where access to reproductive health care doesn’t depend on who you are, where you live or how much you earn; where every Oregonian who can become pregnant has the opportunity to choose their own path to a healthy and meaningful life.

Join PDXWIT #Action in celebrating International Women’s Day, with A Day Without a Woman. Women and our allies will act together for equity, justice, and the human rights of women through a one day demonstration of economic solidarity. The PDXWIT community’s top national issues are civil rights, women’s health, gender equity, and health care, and we all feel it is critical to take part in observing this day.

“Nature has the power to renew and refresh,” wrote Helen Keller. Let’s celebrate that sentiment and join together and refresh our mind, bodies, and spirits. We will be organizing a hike to Pittock Mansion. This is an easy/moderate hike that totals about five miles and has an elevation gain of about 900ft. We are planning to meet at the Portland Audubon Nature Store (5151 NW Cornell Rd, Portland, OR 97210) at 1:00, and our hike will start at 1:30. In support of A Day Without a Woman, we will be wearing red.

As many people know, Portland is one of the fastest-growing tech hubs in the country. What some don’t know is that a lot of the job growth is taking place in what is described as the “silicon forest.” Only a short drive west of downtown, you’ll find companies like Salesforce, Intel, and our company, SureID.

Do you like maps, problem-solving environmental issues, or programming? If so, you might be interested in remote sensing of geospatial science! Join Heather Borunda-Ferguson and other women in the industry for an introduction to remote sensing technology. You will be learning about remote sensing technologies including LiDAR, aerial imagery, hyperspectual imagery and field collection procedures.

Speakers will explain their educational background and how you can enter this growing and in-demand industry. Remote sensing has many opportunities for women. For $30 you get a 10 minute photo session that includes 3 headshots edited on-site and delivered to you that day. These shots come with full printing rights on a PDXWIT flash drive.

PDXWIT would like to find out if its members could benefit from a coding study night. Portland is lucky to have many resources for code study available, but these events tend to be focused on a particular language or skillset. We’d like to gather our technical members together for a more open study group. If you have a personal or work project you’d like another set of eyes on, or if you would like to help others with their code, we’d love to have you. Join us on Thursday, April 13th at 5:00 for an informal fireside chat with Congressman Earl Blumenauer at New Relic. Earl Blumenauer is the U.S. Representative for Oregon's 3rd congressional district, serving since 1996. His district includes most of East Portland and cities to the east of Portland.

We will use this as an opportunity to learn how our top issues — Civil Rights, Women's Health, Gender Equity, and Health Care — are playing out on the national stage. The Congressman has an hour to answer questions and so we will be accepting pre submitted questions (you can submit yours here - https://docs.google.com/a/pdxwit.org/forms/d/1fdxGvmkaYR8o_URbVhOcTYFuixIkjREPlRQnpFCege4/viewform?edit_requested=true ) as well as drawing raffle tickets so that we can get as many questions answered as possible in the hour.

Women and other underrepresented groups in tech, particularly those who call North and Northeast Portland home, are invited to a special Lean Coffee networking event. Tokio, backed by the Rust futures library, has a unique execution model. The talk will do a deep dive, explaining the context, rational, and how it is implemented

Tokio author Carl Lerche will  explain how the tokio-core reactor is implemented. Attendees will have an easier time following along if they've read Rust's beginner documentation, but no prior knowledge of Tokio or futures is required.

Coderetreat.org is a self-organized, volunteer-led organization dedicated to enabling software developers to help each other improve their craft and teaming skills. Software developers of all sorts gather with their machines, IDEs and the ready-to-code Conway's Game of Life. A Coderetreat facilitator assists the developers during several 45-minute sessions throughout the day. Jean Richardson and Tanya Crenshaw will be teaming up to facilitate this Coderetreat. Tech Academy is donating space and providing breakfast and lunch for the event.

Come along for a day of codeplay in a supportive environment and help Coderetreat follow the sun during the global celebration of software development! If you were there in Februrary, we look forward to seeing you again. If you missed that event, grab your laptop, your favorite IDE, and come along.

We started PDXWIT #Action in January to help our community get involved in the issues we care about. In May, we are holding a workshop with organizer Natalie Sundeleaf Sept to help give us historical context for our work moving forward.

This workshop provides a framework for how to organize and create momentum for social justice in their community. It’s for anyone, from the curious beginner to the established organizer. The content is an overview of activism and organizing in America, including what worked or didn’t work, where we are now and what we see both locally and nationally. The workshop includes an interactive lecture and also discussion.

Natalie Sundeleaf Sept is a sixth generation Oregonian with broad ties to the political and art communities of Portland. Her work includes time with Congresswoman Bonamici and Commissioner Fish, as well as President Obama’s 2008 campaign. She was most recently an advance staffer for Hillary Clinton. She is a trained painter and splits her time at community events and in the studio. Her art maintains a civic lens and received local fame for the Dishwasher Project in 2013. When she's not painting or organizing, she's running, hiking or watching basketball.

PSU Computer Science professor Bart Massey has mentored a variety of capstone projects using Rust, as well as writing a variety of projects in the language. He'll tell us about some chess playing code that he wrote in Rust.

Suggested donation in support of the Women’s Strength program: $5-$10

PDXWIT #Action is proud to offer a Women’s Strength self-defense class on June 12th at 5:30. The introductory class is presented by WomenStrength, who introduce all those who identify as women to strategies — including survival-level fighting skills — to defend against sexual assault. This workshop is in support of PDXWIT #Action’s top local issue of supporting public safety. Class activities and discussions are designed to help participants identify their risks, evaluate their strengths and explore their options for dealing with the threat of sexual violence. Class activities focus on practicing verbal and physical strategies and discussion topics focus on sexual and domestic violence. Although the WomenStrength program is operated out of the Portland Police Bureau, the instructors are not police officers. They are highly skilled civilians who teach safety and de-escalation to the community at large.

Note: This training is neither based on nor in support of Portland Police Bureau’s tactics that have been criticized as an excessive use of force.

We’ve all been at the negotiation table, whether we choose to participate or not. While it’s easy to avoid this short-lived discomfort, doing so can cost the average person around $500,000 in lost income over the course of their lifetime. Making the decision to negotiate is the first step — this talk will help with the rest.

In this talk, we will discuss the circumstances that have lead to the pervasive underpaying of minority groups; the ways that companies can improve the situation; and how we, as job seekers, can take the reins and better advocate for our own value.

Tiberius Hefflin recently graduated from the University of West of Scotland with a degree in computer security. She has relocated to Portland, OR, where she evangelizes for privacy and security while contracting as a Security Evaluation Engineer at Intel. She is passionate about encouraging small children to take the plunge into STEM and about laughing at cats on the internet.

She just stepped away from the negotiation table and was able to attain a 50% increase in pay. She will share the tools and tricks she used to get there:

The focus of this workshop is to learn about the Agile framework, methodologies, and practices. Participants will learn the basics of Agile, the Scrum and Kanban variants, and the similarities and differences between them. The workshop is part lecture, part hands-on group exercises. This talk explores the connections between language and problem solving, how the metaphors that we use can expand or constrain our thinking, and how it all relates to our identities as software developers and as human beings. Along the way we'll learn about linguistics, category theory, Russian colors, gigantic bridges in France, and how to pronounce the word "lacuna". And you'll definitely have some things to think about. Hopefully, in new ways.

ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. Matthew will be sharing his journey with Rusoto, Rust's unofficial AWS SDK. He'll cover how Rusoto came about, what it's like working on it, and how it works as well as examples of how it can be used.

Pragmatic Microservices, by Randy Shoup, VPE @ Stitch Fix

If you are considering, or in the process of, moving to microservices, you probably want to come to this event. Randy Shoup, a 25-year tech veteran in Silicon Valley, will share his insights into whether and when an organization should consider migrating to microservices and how to do that successfully, referencing examples from Google, eBay, Stitch Fix, as well as many smaller organizations he has worked with.

The Talk

One of the most powerful trends in software today is building large systems out of composable microservices. Many large-scale web companies have migrated over time to this architecture – and for good reason. But, as with any powerful technique, microservices come with their own brand of tradeoffs, and it is important to be aware of them before deciding whether they are appropriate in any particular case. They are not for every scale of problem, for every stage of company, or for every team.

This session takes a pragmatic approach to microservices, and compares them to the alternatives at different stages of company evolution. Using examples from Google, eBay, and Stitch Fix, as well as from smaller organizations, it makes practical suggestions about whether, when, and how an organization should consider adopting a microservices architecture. Assuming microservices are the appropriate choice, it outlines an experience-based, incremental approach to making a successful re-architecture to microservices.

Dana Scheider will speak about executive dysfunction, a set of cognitive/psychological conditions that affect the brain's planning and organization functions. These conditions affect a lot of neurodivergent folks and a lot of people who have them don't even know what they are. The talk discusses what executive dysfunction is and how to deal with these conditions as an affected individual or someone who has to work with one.

Carla Quisenberry is an Intellectual property attorney at Miller Nash Graham & Dunn. As a woman who has been in a male dominated field for the past ten years, she has a great interest in advancing the careers of other women. This month, Shea Newton will be presenting "Writing Software That's Safe Enough To Drive A Car!"

Autonomous cars run on software, and most of the microcontrollers in today's cars are programmed using C. We have found that even the best code checking for C does not protect against system-crippling errors - the kind of errors that could endanger the lives of future drivers. C is simply not the right language for safety-critical software, but what about Rust?

## Target audience

I'd like to try and keep this talk relatively high level. Examples of self-corrupting code may resonate more with developers who have written C but ideally the talk will apply to anyone interested in Rust and curious about the state of self-driving car technology.
